Discover the IUB Advantage

In 2014, the University of Toronto accepted 259 medical students from a pool of 3,153 applicants, resulting in a competitive acceptance rate of just 9%. This highlights the challenge of securing admission into Canadian medical schools. However, the International University of Barbados – School of Medicine (IUB) offers a truly global medical education, providing an excellent education at a competitive and affordable price. Our student body includes a significant number of Canadian students, making it a unique opportunity for those looking to study in the Caribbean.

"The road to residency is difficult and requires dedication and hard work. However, IUB’s staff does their best to guide each individual along the way."

Trevor Hitchings, 2016 IUB Graduate
Residency: University of Ottawa

Residency and Licensure:
IUB has a strong track record of placing Canadian students into medical residencies throughout Canada. Canadian students are eligible to participate in both the U.S. National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and the Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS). To be eligible for the CaRMS, students must pass the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE). IUB graduates have successfully matched to competitive residency programs at renowned hospitals, including the University of Ottawa and Queen’s University, among others.

Student Loan Program for Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents

IUB School of Medicine is approved by the Government of Canada and is listed under the CanLearn Master Designated List (MDL). This allows eligible students from Alberta, New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Ontario, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan, and Yukon to apply for loans under the Canada Student Loan Program.

Additionally, students from Ontario are eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Canadian students can also apply for the Medical Professional Student Line of Credit from any Canadian bank or financial institution to support their studies at IUB.

Canadian Student Association (CSA)

The Canadian Student Association (CSA) at IUB is a student-run association that provides a sense of community for Canadian students. It celebrates Canadian culture by organizing events such as Canada Day and Thanksgiving and also contributes to the local community in Barbados through various outreach initiatives. We strongly encourage all students, both Canadian and international, to participate in CSA activities and experience the vibrant Canadian culture.
