Medical & Rehabilitation Engineering Academic Program Notice:  The Bachelor of Prosthetics & Orthotics (BPO) curriculum at International University of Barbados is designed in accordance with global physical rehabilitation standards, integrating human anatomy, biomechanics, gait analysis, 3D printing assistive technology, custom prosthetic alignment, and mandatory clinical hospital rotations.

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Prosthetics & Orthotics (BPO) at International University of Barbados is a specialized 4.5-year undergraduate medical healthcare degree (including a mandatory 6-month clinical internship). The program trains rehabilitation engineers and clinical specialists who design, fabricate, and fit custom artificial limbs (prostheses) and supportive braces (orthoses) for individuals with limb amputations, neuromuscular disorders, or musculoskeletal injuries.

Combining clinical medicine, biomechanical engineering, material science, and CAD/CAM 3D printing technology, prosthetists and orthotists play a vital role in restoring mobility, alignment, and independence to patients of all ages.

Students gain practical exposure in state-of-the-art prosthetic fabrication workshops, gait evaluation laboratories, computer-aided design (CAD) suites, and hospital clinical wards, working directly under experienced clinical practitioners.

Why Study BPO at IUB?

Our Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation offers dedicated hands-on training in upper and lower limb prosthetics, spinal orthotics, pediatric mobility aids, and myoelectric bionic limbs. Students benefit from multidisciplinary collaboration with orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists, and bioengineers.

International Clinical & Bio-Engineering Standards

The demand for skilled Prosthetists and Orthotists is rapidly growing globally. Our curriculum meets international rehabilitation education benchmarks, preparing graduates for licensing, certification, and career opportunities across global health systems.
