The MRCS Clinical Premier Training is a specialized program designed to enhance doctors' knowledge and skills in general surgery. MRCS Part A Exam

The MRCS Part A is a written exam that evaluates candidates' knowledge in surgical principles and applied basic sciences. It consists of multiple-choice questions covering anatomy, physiology, pathology, and patient care. Part A tests the essential theoretical knowledge needed for surgical practice.

Exam Requirements

To be eligible for the MRCS Part A exam, candidates must hold a recognized medical degree and should have completed at least 12 months of postgraduate clinical experience. This ensures that the candidate has necessary surgical and clinical foundation before attempting the exam.

One-day exam, No images

No negative marking, and the exam is conducted three times a year.

MRCS Part B Exam

MRCS Part B is conducted as an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) to assess a candidate's hands-on skills and core competencies needed for a career in surgery.

This exam is divided into different stations, each one is dedicated in evaluating a specific aspects of surgical practice, including clinical examination techniques, communication abilities, procedural skills, and a solid understanding of surgical anatomy.

Detailed Exam Format & Stations Breakdown

The MRCS Part B is a practical, objectively structured clinical examination (OSCE) designed to test a broad range of applied surgical skills and knowledge. The examination is split into two key areas i.e. Knowledge Stations and Skills Stations.

Knowledge Stations (8 stations)

Applied Surgical Knowledge (includes anatomy, pathology, applied surgical science, and critical care).

These stations assess your ability to apply core surgical knowledge in a clinical setting and it includes interpreting imaging or anatomical models, understanding disease pathology, and managing surgical emergencies.

Skills Stations (9 stations)

  • Communication Skills: Taking patient history, explaining diagnoses or procedures to patients or relatives, and communicating with other healthcare professionals.
  • Clinical and Procedural Skills: Performing physical examinations, attending clinical procedures, and demonstrating safe, patient-centered practices.
