FRCR Part 1 Exam
The FRCR Part 1 Exam is the initial stage of the FRCR qualification, focusing on foundational knowledge in radiology. It covers Physics and Anatomy, which are essential for understanding imaging techniques and body structures. Successfully passing this stage is essential for candidates to advance in their clinical radiology training journey.
Exam Requirements
To be eligible for the FRCR Part 1 exam, candidates must hold a recognized medical degree and should have completed at least 12 months of postgraduate medical experience. This requirement ensures that they acquire the necessary foundational clinical exposure before attempting the exam.
Exam Format
Physics and Anatomy, will be conducted over two separate days.
Physics Exam: 2 Hours
Anatomy Exam: 90 Mins
Anatomy: 100 images with questions
Physics Exam: 40 MCQs
Physics: Principles of physics applied to radiology.
Anatomy: Cross-sectional and radiographic anatomy.
Anatomy:
- Multiple-choice questions with a free-text answer box for each question.
- Each question shows a radiological image (X-ray, CT, MRI, US, Nuclear Medicine).
- Arrows or markers point to structures.
- Candidate writes the exact anatomical term (short written answer format).
- All questions carry equal marks.
Physics:
- Multiple choice questions consisting of a stem and five statements, where the candidates can choose the right option (True or False).
- Topics include Radiation Production, Radiation Protection, Imaging Equipment (X-Ray, CT, MRI, US, Nuclear Medicine), Image Quality, and Safety.
- All questions carry equal marks.
Key Points:
- Both papers are computer-based exams.
- The pass mark varies each year, but it's usually around 70-75%.
- There is no negative marking, so attempting all questions is advisable.
FRCR Part 2A
The FRCR Part 2A Exam evaluates the knowledge based on advanced clinical radiology through six modules covering key body systems, including Cardiovascular, Musculoskeletal, Gastrointestinal, and more.
This multiple-choice exam challenges candidates to demonstrate their understanding of pathology and diagnostic techniques across these areas. Each module addresses specific clinical scenarios and image interpretation relevant to radiological practice.
Exam Requirements
To be eligible for the FRCR Part 2A Exam, candidates must have successfully passed the FRCR Part 1 Exam and completed at least 24 months of clinical radiology training.
This requirement ensures that the candidate has gained practical experience and a solid foundation in radiological principles before progressing to advanced clinical modules.
Exam Format
Exam consists of 2 papers, conducted on the same day.
Each paper containing 120 single-best-answer questions.
Each paper lasts 3 hours.
SBA Format:
Each question presents a clinical scenario or a radiological image, followed by a question and five answer options. Candidates must select the single best answer from the options provided.
Broad Coverage:
The questions cover a wide range of topics in clinical radiology, including:
- Imaging modalities (CT, MRI, ultrasound, etc.)
- Interventional radiology
- Nuclear medicine
- Radiation oncology
- Cross-sectional anatomy
- Physics and radiation protection
- Clinical decision-making and problem-solving
Clinical Relevance:
